Planted between lush, forest-covered mountains and breathtaking beaches, the Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City) has many charms, most notably the Cariocas, its exuberant residents. Due to its numerous facets, Rio is the Brazilian tourism capital. The wonderful city, located in the Southeast Region of Brazil, with 7 million inhabitants, in an area of 1,2255.3 km², coastal line with 246.22 km² and green area of 325.6 km², is the mosaic of enchantments scattered between the sea and the mountain.
Rio is a city of unusual urban diversity, with beaches, mountains, skyscrapers and the omnipresent favelas (shanty towns) all woven into the fabric of the landscape. The city itself can be divided into two zones: the Zona Norte (North Zone), which consists of industrial, working-class neighborhoods, and the Zona Sul (South Zone), full of middle- and upper-class neighborhoods and famous beaches. Rio's Centre business district and the site of its first settlement, marks the boundary between the two, and a number of important museums and colonial buildings are there.
Rio’s post card is the symbol of Brazil. Corcovado, with the Christ Redeemer is running towards being one of the new 7 Wonders of the World in an international contest. And there is also the Sugar-Loaf Hill, a pleasurable trip that reveals the entire city. The emblematic tourism points are numerous, but it is important to mention the Maracanã Stadium, largest temple of the five-time champion Brazilian soccer and Passarela do samba [Samba Catwalk], where the samba-schools parade, which also participate in the largest event of the city, the carnival of Rio de Janeiro.
The parts of Rio you are most likely to explore stretch along the shore of the Baía de Guanabara and the Atlantic Ocean. South from Centro are the neighborhoods of Lapa, Glória, Catete, Flamengo, Botafogo and Urca - where the striking peak of Pão de Açúcar dominates the landscape. Further south the neighborhoods of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon - for many travelers to the city, the only places they stop.
Rio has a typical tropical climate, so expect some rain and humidity. Summer (December to March) is hot, with temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to a scorching 40°C (104°F). Winter temperatures range from around 20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F), with plenty of good beach days.
Rio is the Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City) because everything ands with samba, carnival, soccer games and, of course, a day at the beach.
